Anjelica Roselyn Dariah is a freelance fashion illustrator and designer. Part of London College of Fashion's alumni, Anjelica's client list includes, Hunger Magazine online, NYU, Google UK, Skinnydip London and Starbucks UK. Her vibrant and colourful work has lead her to being named as one of Radisson Red's "Best Fashion illustrators in 2016, and ELLE Greece Magazine's "Favourite Fashion Illustrators" in 2017.

 

Could you describe your path to becoming an illustrator?

 

 

 

 

I’ve been drawing since I was 5 - even throughout my life with school and other jobs I’ve had I have always been drawing. After my design degree at LCF I decided to do it on more of a full time basis. Illustration is my first love.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

How does identity impact our lives as creative people and how does yours impact your creative work?

 

 

 

 

I think your identity - be it your race, heritage, sexual orientation etc - always steers your creativity and how you see the world. I even find that some illustrators look like their artwork because we start out drawing ourselves or people that represent our image or identity.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

What does creativity mean to you?

 

 

 

 

Creativity is living your best life. Being happy and free to express yourself and make your mark on the world.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

How do you nurture your creativity?

 

 

 

 

Always try to have fresh inspiration, you can’t have the same inspiration point for too long. Keep it moving!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

What cultural barriers have you faced and how have you overcome them?

 

 

 

 

Bring the first/only black woman in my creative space - be that school or work, and knowing that there are still places and achievements untouched by black women that we have not reached - yet.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

What has been an important lesson you’ve learned so far?

How has social media and the internet helped you as a creative?

 

 

 

 

Absolutely, the majority of my clients find me on social media - especially instagram. It’s such a great way to represent yourself and be in control of your own content. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

What kind of projects are you working on now?

 

 

 

 

Working on the annual magazine Survivors with NYU & NYAASA for survivors of sexual assault. This is the second consecutive year I am working on this with them and I’m so excited and honoured that they chose me again.
